John Frusciante
When I have the time I will write a proper biography for the man, but for the time being you will have to settle for point form.
- John was born on March 5th, 1970 in Queens, New York
- As he was growing up, he was a competent sportsman, but lacked the competitive attitude
- At age 9 he discovered the guitar and punk music. He learnt to play the entire Never Mind The Bollocks album by the Sex Pistols.
- He first saw the Red Hot Chili Peppers play when he was 15 after his family moved to L.A. He fell in love with their music: "Their music meant everything to me". He learnt to play exactly like Hillel Slovak (the Chili Peppers' guitarist at the time)
- At age 16 he left home and found an apartment to pursue a career in music
- John had never played with a band before the Chili Peppers. He lined up for hours to audition for Frank Zappa's band, but chickened out at the last minute
- He jammed with the Chili Peppers and they were totally blown away by the similarity between him and Hillel - he played, moved and looked just like him
- Flea nominated John for a spot in Thelonious Monster - one of John's favourite bands - but shortly prior to his audition he was snatched up by the Chili Peppers
- The band recorded their fourth album, Mothers Milk in 1989
- John enjoyed the high life, smoking pot everyday, screwing a bunch of girls and playing guitar
- After the recording of 1991's smash hit album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, John realised that he could no longer live up to people's expectations of him. His best work was on this album, but he found that popularity was strangling his creativity.
- He left the band in May of 1992, in the middle of a Japanese tour
- John first tried heroin shortly after B.S.S.M. was finished, and then decided he wanted to be a junkie
- In 1994 John released his first solo album on American Recordings (Rick Rubin [B.S.S.M. producer]'s label) - Niandra LaDes And Usually Just A T-Shirt - which was a collection of 24 original tracks and a Bad Brains cover, recorded partially while he was still in the Red Hot Chili Peppers
- His album wasn't well received by the critics, claiming that it "sucked". Nevertheless, it sold over 100,000 copies
- After "Niandra" was released John fell heavily into his drug addiction. He was kicked out of his Beverly Hills home, left to reside in hotels. But he spent most of his time recording
- John's condition got steadily worse. He stopped eating - living on supplement tablets. He felt that the heroin emphasized who he was and helped him to be a better person, claiming that without it there was a "wall"
- His second solo album - Smiles From The Streets You Hold - was released by Birdman Records in 1997. The material was even more twisted and difficult than his first album and left the critics scratching their heads
- He came very close to dying and eventually went into rehab in early 1998
- In April 1998, Flea pursuaded Anthony and Chad to ask John if he would consider rejoining. John was overjoyed and began jamming in Flea's garage straight away
- Within a couple of months, the band had enough material for a new album. Recording commenced in January of 1999 and in June Californication was released. The new songs were different to anything they had done before - very soft and beautiful, and in parts reflecting some of John's solo work
- The band is still touring to promote Californication and John has 40 new songs which he will soon be releasing on a new solo album
"I may once again know John..."
